My brother’s longtime girlfriend loves puzzles and zoo animals. But I can’t keep getting her a puzzle every year, right? — C.W.
How about a set of these incredibly cute, blown-glass animal drinking glasses? Bonus: You can add to her set for years to come. I also love this photography book from Joel Sartore, whose life’s mission is to make portraits of the world’s animals.
Because my father is getting older and less able, it’s hard for him to get out and about or even do things around the house. He’s fairly set in his ways, and his world has gotten very small. What could help make his life more comfortable or interesting? —M.R.
If he likes books of any kind—histories, biographies, fiction, how-tos—a membership to Libro.fm audiobooks could be a great way to engage him intellectually and broaden his mental horizons. But it does require some sort of digital device like a phone, tablet, or computer. If that’s not right, think about something to make “his ways” easier and more pleasant. Does he start the day with a cup of joe? How about a mug that will keep it hot for hours? Does he have a favorite chair or spot on the couch? How about a weighted lap blanket? Does he walk to the mailbox every morning? Maybe a good pair of slippers would make that walk more comfortable.
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are both shopaholics that just buy themselves whatever they want. And they both think gift cards are a lazy gift. Help! —B.H.K.
Ah, yes, shopping for a shopper can be a real effort. The trick is finding something they didn’t know they wanted. I don’t know your budget or what kind of things they like, but some of my favorite gifts for people who seemingly have everything include this party-ready margarita maker, this oddly endearing duck light, an elegant and portable table lamp, the best pineapple in the world (seriously), and this gorgeous and fragrant wreath.
My husband has great style, but this comes with being picky. He knows what he likes, and he buys it when he wants it. After many years together there are only so many sentimental, handmade things I can give the guy! —M.D.
Buying clothes or accessories for anyone can be tricky, but it’s especially challenging when that person has great personal style. I don’t know where he leans aesthetically, but these Italian silk ties based on vintage ’80s designs are gorgeous and unique. A personalized sterling money clip is classic enough to suit any style, as is this investment-worthy leather briefcase. For gifts that he’s not going to wear, we happen to have an entire guide of aesthetic gift picks, as well as one for all of our most luxurious picks. Both are good places to start for picky people with great taste.
