Top pick
Who it’s for: The WinkBed (Luxury Firm) should suit back- and stomach-sleepers, and it may especially appeal to people who rotate between the two positions throughout the night. We also think it could be suitable for side-sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress. The WinkBed should hold up for most sleepers over time—particularly those who weigh less than 200 pounds. Those who weigh over 200 pounds may notice body impressions in the mattress over time.
How it feels: Out of the box, the Luxury Firm seems firm. But after a couple of weeks, it settles into a more traditional medium-firm feel. The WinkBed also comes in a Softer version (designed especially for side-sleepers), a Firmer model (for stomach- and back-sleepers), and a Plus version (for those who weigh more than 300 pounds).
Why it’s great
It’s cushioned without being sinky or overtly huggy. The 13½-inch WinkBed is a good choice for people who want a substantial-feeling mattress with sturdy, resilient support (including around the edges), as well as a cushioned top that doesn’t envelop or hug you. One tester who rated this mattress their favorite said they liked how it felt plush without caving in under their weight. Because it doesn’t include any memory foam, the WinkBed is a great choice for people who dislike a body-conforming sink or those who overheat during the night. We’ve included the WinkBed in multiple brand-concealed panel tests since 2019, and it has consistently stood out as a well-liked, crowd-pleasing mattress for its nuanced, substantial feel.
It comes in multiple firmness levels. The WinkBed comes in Firmer, Luxury Firm, and Softer. In this guide we recommend the Luxury Firm, which is the WinkBed’s medium-firm option. The Softer version is specifically designed for side-sleepers, and the Firmer version is for stomach- and back-sleepers. We’ve group-tested the Luxury Firm and Softer versions in past panel tests, and they both dominated the competition in popularity.
It’s well made from durable materials. The WinkBed in Luxury Firm features two layers of non-memory-foam polyfoam, with densities of 1½ and 2½ pounds per cubic foot. That should prove durable for people who weigh over 200 pounds. (The Softer version has an extra inch of pillow top and softer foams, so it could be prone to body impressions for those who weigh over 200 pounds.) The WinkBed’s non-traditional quilted cover jazzes up the surface with a more-textured feel, and it might be better than sock-covered hybrids at camouflaging body impressions.
Its tall coils are pocketed and sturdy. The WinkBed has 1,054 support coils to help keep your spine from flexing and the mattress borders from sloping. Unlike the 6-inch coils in the Leesa Sapira Hybrid, the WinkBed’s support coils are 8 inches high, giving the bed a comparatively springier feel (and a loftier look). All of the WinkBed’s coils are pocketed, offering some motion isolation.
The edge support is good. The WinkBed’s perimeter has a subtle slide when you sit on the cushioned edge; it doesn’t collapse like an all-foam mattress might, thanks to the firm coils underneath.
It comes with a generous trial period, with caveats. The WinkBed has a 120-day trial period, one of the longest of our picks. But you have to sleep on it for at least 30 days before you can return or exchange the mattress. (You’ll get a full refund for the return. For exchanges, however, you’ll have to pay a $50 fee to cover the cost of shipping your new mattress and getting rid of your original purchase.) If you decide on a different firmness level after that time window (or even years later, if your preferences change), you can exchange the mattress for half the cost (plus shipping and haul-away charges).
Flaws but not dealbreakers
It’s hard to try this mattress before you buy it. The company doesn’t have a showroom or partner with any national retailers. (Currently, some 25 online-mattress tryout locations and stores feature the WinkBed.)
There’s no option for white-glove delivery. WinkBed ships its mattresses rolled up in a box for free. Hybrids with lots of coils, like this one, are heavier than the typical foam-bed-in-a-box, so expect setup to be a two-person job, especially if stairs are involved. (By comparison, Leesa has an option for in-home setup, for an extra fee of $160.) Because WinkBeds are manufactured at a single factory in Wisconsin, it may take up to two weeks to receive your mattress, whereas other boxed mattresses may arrive in as little as one week.
You have to be diligent about rotating it regularly to avoid body impressions. As with all mattresses that have a thick pillow top, the WinkBed should be rotated diligently to avoid body impressions. In fact, the company recommends rotating the mattress every two weeks for the first three months, and then every two months thereafter. That’s a lot of rotating, particularly since this is a heavy mattress with no handles, so it may not be suitable for people who weigh more than 200 pounds. (Those who weigh closer to 300 pounds may want to try the Winkbed Plus, which we haven’t tried.) Under the lifetime warranty, the company will replace the mattress if it develops indentations, but only if they’re more than 1½ inches deep. (By contrast, Leesa will honor its warranty for impressions that are at least 1 inch deep.)
