The beloved jigsaw puzzle has been a staple in homes for over 250 years. Its enduring popularity can be attributed to the numerous benefits it offers, including stress relief, improved memory, and more. As International Puzzle Day approaches, ITV This Morning’s resident GP, Dr. Zoe Williams, shares her insights on why this centuries-old pastime could be the key to a calmer and happier you.
“Puzzles offer a sanctuary of mindfulness and help anchor our thoughts in the present moment,” Dr. Williams explains. “In our fast-paced world of constant distractions, completing a jigsaw puzzle gives our minds a much-needed break.”
She elaborates, “By focusing on a single activity, rather than multitasking – which so many of us do too often – we can relax and experience a sense of peace. The feeling of accomplishment that comes from completing a puzzle is a small triumph that can positively impact other areas of our lives.”
Aside from promoting overall well-being, jigsaw puzzles also have significant cognitive benefits, according to Dr. Williams.
“Puzzles are excellent brain exercises that improve memory and increase IQ. In the short term, they can reduce stress, enhance concentration, and sharpen problem-solving skills. In the long term, they can build resilience, patience, and foster a sharper mind. Research has also shown that regularly completing puzzles can decrease the risk of developing dementia.”
In today’s digital age, maintaining social connections is essential. It’s no surprise that the number of puzzle gatherings is on the rise, ranging from competitive events to casual jigsaw sessions over coffee.
“Puzzles are a fantastic icebreaker activity that offers a shared focus, making conversations flow effortlessly,” Dr. Williams shares. “And, most importantly, they are for everyone, regardless of age! They are perfect for sharing stories, bonding time, and creating lasting memories with loved ones.”
Dr. Zoe Williams is a proud ambassador for Ravensburger’s Positively Puzzling campaign, which celebrates the benefits of jigsaw puzzles for all ages.
